Mortars Lime
Benefits of Lime Mortars
The benefits of lime over cement or gypsum products are many, especially in any older building (without a cavity wall) and in new 'breathing wall' healthy builds. Lime is better for the environment to manufacture and use. It takes about 20% less CO2 to manufacture lime products than cement products. Lime products also re-absorb CO2 as they set, so further reducing emissions.
Environmental Benefits of using Lime Mortars
Lime mortars breathable properties add longevity because it helps reduce damp problems in walls. Many damp problems can be traced to the use of cement mortars, renders or plasters, which effectively 'seal' damp into parts of the wall. Lime acts as a kind of 'wick' drawing moisture in and allowing it to evaporate at the surface. The lime products are also flexible allowing you to avoid expansion gaps in buildings and cracking in renders or plasters over time.
On all buildings, the softness of a lime mortar can prolong the life of the building material. How many older houses do we see with the stone eroding away, while cement mortar stands proud? The use of lime for pointing and restoration is an important one - using cement products can and will damage your building over time. Lime products also mean that stone and brick products are recyclable. Being softer and with less binding adhesion, it is relatively simple to recycle building blocks and components. Bricks and stone have a far longer lifespan that the building they are used in.
